There have been localized extinctions and substantial declines in population size of the Tasmanian Giant Freshwater Loberster have occurred in at least 12 rivers (Sinclair, 2010). They only live in 12 rivers.

Prior to the ban on A. gouldi fishing which commenced in 1998, catches were estimated to be in excess of 10 000 individuals per year (Hamilton, 2014.)
