Glossary

 

Abatement Plan - Description of operational, monitoring, contingency and closure requirements and conditions for water pollution prevention, investigation and abatement.

 

Aesthetic Value - the value that an object, event or state of affairs (most paradigmatically art work or the natural environment) possesses in virtue of its capacity to elicit pleasure (positive value) or displeasure (negative value) when appreciated or experienced aesthetically.

 

Bequest Value-  in economics, is the value of satisfaction from preserving a natural environment or a historic environment, in other words natural heritage or cultural heritage for future generations.

 

Biennially- Happens every two years

 

Biodiversity - the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.

 

Biological Control - the control of a pest by the introduction of a natural enemy or predator.

 

Biotic Potential - Organism is restricted by environmental resistance, any condition that inhibits the increase in number of the population. It is generally only reached when environmental conditions are very favorable.

 

Biological Potential - The capacity of a population of organisms to increase in numbers under optimum environmental conditions. (Dictionary.com, 2015)

 

Carrying-Capacity- the maximum, equilibrium number of organisms of a particular species that can be supported indefinitely in a given environment. (Dictionary.com 2015)

 

Channel - a passage for water (or other fluids) to flow through; a deep and relatively narrow body of water (as in a river or a harbor or a strait linking two larger bodies) that allows the best passage for vessels. (Dictionary.com , 2015)

 

Critical habitat: The whole or any part of the habitat that is essential to the survival of a species of flora or fauna listed on the Threatened Species Protection Act 1995, which may require special management considerations or protection. (http://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/Documents/threatspstrat.pdf)

 

Conservation - official supervision of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management. (Dictionary.com, 2015)

 

Consumer -  organisms of an ecological food chain that receive energy by consuming other organisms. (Dictionary.com , 2015)

 

Coexist - exist separately or independently but peaceably, often while remaining rivals or adversaries:

Detritus - waste or debris of any kind.

 

Detritivore - an animal that feeds on dead organic material, especially plant detritus.

 

Deforestation - the removal of trees; the state of being clear of trees.

Ecological Community: An assemblage of native species that interact with each other and occupy a common geographical area in the wild.

 

Ecological Role - Ecological role is your position in the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms.

 

Ecotourism - Tourism to places having unspoiled natural resources. (Dictionary.com, 2015)

 

Endangered: taxa (of flora or fauna) in danger of extinction because long-term survival is unlikely while the factors causing them to be endangered continue.

 

Endemic: Confined to a particular area, so that for example, a Tasmanian endemic species occurs naturally only in Tasmania.

 

Ethos - the characteristic spirit of a culture, era, or community as manifested in its beliefs and aspirations.

 

Evolution - the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.

 

Extinct: Not located in the wild during the past 50 years and not in captivity or cultivation. Presumed extinct species are those that have not been found in recent years despite thorough searching.

 

Fauna - the animals of a particular region, habitat, or geological period.

Flagship Species - Species selected to act as an ambassador, icon or symbol for a defined habitat, issue, campaign or environmental cause.

 

Flora - the plants of a particular region, habitat, or geological period.

 

Food Chain-. a hierarchical series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.

 

Fragmentation - Broken into separate parts. (Dictionary.com, 2015)

 

Genetic - of or relating to the science of genetics; pertaining to or referring to origin; tending to occur among members of a family usually by heredity; of or relating to or produced by or being a gene. (Dictionary.com , 2015)

 

Genetic Diversity -  the total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic makeup of a species

 

Habitat - noun the type of environment in which an organism or group normally lives or occurs.

Heritage - is that which is inherited from past generations, maintained in the present, and bestowed to future generations.

 

Intrinsic Value - said to be the value that that thing has “in itself,” or “for its own sake,” or “as such,” or “in its own right.”

 

Maturity - noun state of being mature; full development; the period of time in your life after your physical growth has stopped and you are fully developed. (Dictionary.com , 2015)

 

Natural heritage - refers to the sum total of the elements of biodiversity, including flora and fauna and ecosystem types, together with associated geological structures and formations (geodiversity).

 

Nitrification - the oxidation of the ammonium compounds in dead organic material into nitrites and nitrates by soil nitro bacteria, making nitrogen available to plants. (Dictionary.com , 2015)

 

Non Profit - adj. not commercially motivated; noun an organization chartered for other than profit-making activities. (Dictionary.com , 2015)

 

Old-Growth Forest - Natural forests that have developed over a long period of time.

 

Population - noun a group of organisms of the same species populating a given area.

Preservation - strict setting aside of natural resources to prevent the use or contact by humans or by human intervention. In terms of policy making this often means setting aside areas as nature reserves (otherwise known as wildlife reserves), parks, or other conservation areas.

 

Primary Consumer-  organisms like plants and algae that make their own energy by using the sun.

 

Recovery plan: A plan made under section 25 of the Threatened Species Protection Act 1995, for any species of flora or fauna which is under threat of extinction.

 

Region - the extended spatial location of something; a large indefinite location on the surface of the Earth; the approximate amount of something (usually used proportionally as in `in the region of'); a part of an animal that has a special function or is supplied by a given artery or nerve; a knowledge domain that you are interested in or are communicating about.

Regulation -. an authoritative rule; the state of being controlled or governed.

Reproductive - producing new life or offspring.  (Dictionary.com , 2015)

 

Resistance - the limiting effect of environmental conditions on the numerical  growth of a population.

 

Riparian - of or relating to or located on the banks of a river or stream.

Preservation - maintain (something) in its original or existing state.

 

Siltation - earthy matter, fine sand, or the like carried by moving or running water and deposited as a

sediment.

 

Socioeconomic - relating to or concerned with the interaction of social and economic factors.

 

Species diversity - is a measure of the diversity within an ecological community

 

Turbidity - measure of the degree to which the water loses its transparency due to the presence of suspended particulates

 

Variability - noun the quality of being subject to variation. (Dictionary.com , 2015)

 

Vulnerable: taxa likely to become endangered while factors causing them to be vulnerable continue.
